Obituary of Brother John - Joseph Dolan

BROTHER JOHN-JOSEPH DOLAN, OFM CONV. Brother John-Joseph Dolan, OFM Conv., age 59, died on July 15, 2010 at Salvator Mundi Hospital in Rome, Italy. He was born in Buffalo, NY, May 12, 1951. He is the beloved son of Dorothy (nee Sargent) and the late Eugene J. Dolan; loving brother to Christine (Dan) Bartone-Ford, Coleen (Dan) Beres, Michael (Inson) Dolan, Patrick (Chom) Dolan, Maura (James) Welch, and the late Eugene P. Dolan; godfather to nephews Robert Dolan & Michael Dolan; also survived by many nieces and nephews as well as his Conventual Franciscan brothers. Brother John-Joseph received degrees from Siena College, Loudonville, NY, St. Hyacinth College and Seminary, Granby, MA, and St. Bonaventure University, St. Bonaventure (Olean), NY. In addition, he became a Licensed Practical Nurse at Albany Medical Center, Albany, NY. Over the years, he served the Order and the Church in many capacities in Albany, NY, Rensselaer, NY, Holyoke, MA, Granby, MA, Hoboken, NJ, Charlotte, NC, Philadelphia, PA and Rome, Italy. Deeply rooted in the Franciscan tradition, his early years were spent working in social outreach programs throughout the Province. From 1987 to 1991, he served as the Diocesan Director of Justice and Peace for the Diocese of Charlotte, NC. From 1991 to 1997, he was called upon to share his Franciscan life and wisdom as Director of the Pre-Novitiate Formation Program. In 1997, he was elected to the Provincial Council and served as Secretary of the Province of the Immaculate Conception until 2001 when he was elected Assistant General of the Order. He was re-elected to this important ministry at the 2007 General Chapter and was serving in this capacity at the time of his death on July 15th. In addition to his responsibilities of overseeing the presence, life and ministries of the friars in North America and Great Britain and Ireland, he also generously responded to invitations from all parts of the English-speaking jurisdictions of the Order (Africa, India, Australia and the Philippines) to give classes, lectures and courses on Franciscan spirituality in the Conventual Franciscan tradition. He will live on for years to come in the lives of all those who were touched by his goodness, wisdom and love. A reception of the body will take place at 4 PM on Thursday, July 22, at Our Lady of Victory Basilica, 767 Ridge Road, Lackawanna, NY where the Franciscan Wake Service will be held at 7 PM. On Friday, July 23, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM in the Basilica. Interment will follow in the Friars’ Plot at St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Cheektowaga, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Brother John-Joseph to the "Franciscan Friars’ Retirement Fund" (PO Box 629, Rensselaer, NY, 12144).
