Obituary of Karl J. Skusa

Karl Skusa was born in Gelsenkirchen, Germany to Karl Ernst and Sophie Seligmann on Novemeber 7th, 1934. After school, he apprenticed as a painter and trained to work with plaster, tile, and interior design. Karl was exceptionally talented with these trades. In 1954 he immigrated to the United States and lived in the Riverside neighborhood of Buffalo, New York. There he would meet his wife Elizabeth, another fellow German immigrant who he married on April 27th, 1957. The two would move to West Seneca in 1976 and spend 65 beautiful years as each other's very best friends, bringing two sons, Carl and Paul, into the world. Keeping close to family was essential to Karl as he was lucky to be surrounded by Elizabeth's family, who always stuck together. They were a large group of first-generation Americans that lived near each other for many years and often had big family meals together; Karl and Elizabeth often hosted Holidays at their home. Karl enjoyed camping and hunting trips with his brothers-in-law, where they usually would play pranks on each other. Their nieces and nephews were very close to them because of this; they have fond memories of Karl being the musician of the family, always singing "Joy to the World" and "Proud Mary" in his endearing accent. He was a fantastic musician, especially with the guitar and bass. Karl played in a band called The Music Men for about 16 years, where they performed for significant events such as parties, weddings, and also private family gatherings. He knew how to entertain, have fun, and always keep a great sense of humor. Karl liked to keep himself busy. During his time in Buffalo, he used his skills as a unionized painter for AM&A, where he painted and designed their buildings and acted as a hirer and supervisor of new artists until retirement. He was a proud Freemason for 61 years as a 3rd degree Grand Master and a Safari Club member. Karl will be missed for his ability to bring the family close together and remembered for his captivating personality. Skusa, Karl J. of West Seneca, NY entered into rest on June 12, 2022. Devoted husband of Elizabeth Skusa; beloved father of Carl (Darlene) Skusa and Paul Skusa; cherished Opa of Nicholas (Krystle Talas) and Nathaniel Skusa; loving great-Opa of Cain Andre, Paul Joseph (P.J.), and Oceanna Lynn; dearest brother of Ingrid Shäffer of Germany; also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
