Obituary of Robert J. Burke, Sr.

Robert, affectionately known to those he loved as Bob, was born in Buffalo, New York, on October 9th, 1944, to Thomas and Elizabeth Burke. He was raised alongside siblings Margaret and Vincent and genuinely cherished time spent together as a family. At the end of his dear brother’s life, Bob helped take care of him through the nights by his side. Throughout the ’60s, Bob worked for Bethelem Steel, becoming a district manager for Burger King. Later he would become a store manager for various pharmacy chains in the area until retirement, ultimately coming out of retirement due to monotony. Bob always had an excellent work ethic and persevered through any obstacle ahead of him; even through tough times, he never let his family know how rough things were. He met his future wife Marilyn through a mutual friend who had previously dated her; although they attended the same high school, they had never met before meeting at Café Carlysle. The two became friends themselves and eventually dated, blossoming into a marriage of 53 years. Together, they grew their family by 5 with the addition of Matthew, Erin, and Robert. Bob was known as the “winter Dad,” always taking the kids sledding, while Marilyn was the summer mother taking them to the beach. Family dinners and holiday get-togethers were Bob’s favorite opportunities to catch up with the family, and he was never afraid to tell anyone, “I love you.” Together they would share trips to Darien Lake and Crystal Beach, where he enjoyed sunsets over the water and beautiful lightning storms. Becoming a grandfather was a cherished event for Bob as he was excited to be involved in their activities: his love for them always put a smile on his face. Bob liked to stay updated with the news and sports on television, especially golf every Sunday in his spare time. He always admired pilots and even wanted to become one; he loved airplanes, trains, and boats, especially naval ships. Bob will be missed for his unwavering commitment to family life and remembered for his willingness to always shower the ones he cared for with love. Burke, Robert J., Sr. May 31, 2022 of Hamburg, NY.
