Obituary of Shirley A. O'Connor

Shirley Ann O’Connor, Dufrane (Mother, Sister, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Aunt, Friend) was born on June 19, 1937, in Buffalo, NY. Shirley used to work in the food industry with her only sibling, Carol DiGiore. They carved roasts at the Aud Club for the Buffalo Sabres and the Buffalo Bills for almost 40 years. In her younger years, you could find Shirley playing softball. Don came up to bat into Shirley’s life and stole her heart like a base. On October 19, 1957, they tied the knot, having a wonderful life together for 57 years. Don and Shirley had three lovely boys, Mark, Keith, and Kevin. She loved her boys more than sweets. She thought nothing of packing all of them up with all their hockey gear on the most frigid Buffalo mornings for hockey practice. Shirley accompanied her son’s hockey games every weekend for many years. Later, she would be blessed with her beautiful grandchildren, Courtney, Chelsea, Katie, Kyle, Krystal, Melanie, and Brittany. As grandmothers do, when Shirley babysat her grandkids, she let them have some rebellious fun. Allowing them to stay up until midnight and eat pizza without their mom and dad’s knowledge. Shirley and her granddaughters enjoyed girls’ weekends out in the big apple. Her sister Carol, many of her girlfriends, and Shirley every summer would visit across the lake at Crystal Beach, a trip she looked forward to every year. The holidays, family gatherings, traditions of singing Christmas carols with family on Christmas Eve, and a delicious homemade meal were some of Shirley's fondest family memories. Shirley had a unique palette for a piece of minced meat pie which no one else would eat except her and her son Kevin. Shirley had many furry companions in her lifetime, but her heart was very fond of her little black Yorkie Poo dog named Licorice, who lived for 17 years. Shirley was reborn when she relocated to the sunshine state, Florida. Apprehensive about the move at first, but once she arrived, she fell in love with all the palm trees, exotic birds, sunshine, and warm temperatures. Shirley became Miss Socialite in no time and made many new friends in Grand Villa. Shirley and her friends enjoyed crafting and ceramics. They would play bingo frequently together and never missed a single game. Shirley was known to be a non-drinker, but once she settled into Grand Villa, she enjoyed a cold beer in the afternoon with her good friend Jerry. On lovely days you could catch Shirley scootering down the road and into the McDonald’s drive-thru for a burger or at the waterfront to feed the birds and watch the waves. Despite her new love for Florida as a loyal Buffalonian, Shirley loved her Sahlens hot dogs, Chiavetta’s chicken, corned beef and cabbage, and her delicious homemade spaghetti. Her spaghetti is still famous amongst her granddaughters. Even though Shirley enjoyed many savory foods, she had a bit of a sweet tooth. Her son Kevin picked her up a new bag of Oreos, Kit Kat Bars, York Peppermint Patties, and Mounds Bars every couple of days, Shirley claiming the sweets were all for the workers nearby. Shirley will always be remembered as a funny and sweet woman, and deeply missed for her gentle spirit. O’Connor, Shirley A. (nee Dufrane) of Lake View, NY passed on February 26, 2022.
