Obituary of Mark W. Long

Mark W. Long Sr. was born in Buffalo, New York, on May 6, 1955, to William G. Long and Carole J. Downes. Mark's mom passed away at an early age and after being a family with only 2 siblings he was lucky to enjoy his life with Eleanor and his dad whom raised a lovely family, with 8 children. More than anything, Mark was a family man; he was a devoted husband to his loving wife of 37 years, Betsy Long, and to his three sons, Markie Jr, Matthew, and Brian. His family meant the world to him. Raising three boys meant many years of sports. He spent most of those years coaching his son’s hockey and baseball teams. When he wasn’t coaching, he was their #1 spectator. Betsy and Mark still made it a priority to catch games as of recent. While Mark’s heart beamed with his boys, his grandbabies brought so much added joy. In fact, during Mark’s illnesses, the only thing that would make him feel better and put a smile on his face was seeing his grandchildren. Visiting them to watch them grow, seeing pictures and video updates made him so happy. Despite his most recent decline in health, he hung on long enough to welcome his newest grandson, Wyatt, just one month ago. Mark may not have worn his emotions on his sleeve, but there was never a doubt how much he truly loved his family. He would do anything for them. Mark and Betsy originally met during their college years. Time drifted them apart but years later the pair ran into each other at a horse track in March of 1984. Mark and Betsy hit it off, fell in love, and were married October of the same year. One could say, the rest is history! The two were inseparable their entire marriage, they did everything together. Mark adored Betsy. Mark loved the beach. He just loved to sit and watch the serene settings, often catching a sunset with Betsy by his side. Fourth of July was Mark’s favorite holiday. He loved fireworks. If you saw his phone, you could see pictures of every single firework of many years past. The two of them were huge fans of the Rolling Stones; they did attend a recent concert and stood the entire time, happily together. One of Mark’s passions throughout his life included telling stories. Most of you can attest he often told the same stories, over and over and OVER again!!! You probably have heard him even complain about the dogs and how much he disliked them. But truth be told, he secretly loved them when no one was looking. Another hobby of Mark’s that started back in his 20’s was horseracing. He loved tending to his own racehorses, a passion he shared with his father on daily basis, that lasted for years. He enjoyed every aspect of it from betting, to claiming racehorses, socializing with family and friends, and ultimately, to meeting the one true love of his life, Besty. God doesn’t promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow, or sunshine without rain. But HE did promise strength for the day and light for the way. May you all find happiness as you reflect on your own memories of Mark. Long, Mark W., Sr. January 27, 2022 of Hamburg, NY. Beloved husband of Betsy (nee Schiappa) Long; devoted father of Matthew (Kailey), Brian (Jordyn) and late Mark Long, Jr.; cherished grandfather of Ledger, Rowan, Sadie, Wyatt, and late Harlow Long; loving son of late William (Eleanor) Long and late Carole (nee Downes) Long; also survived by many brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews.
