Edward Newell

Obituary of Edward M. Newell

Edward Newell grew up in Sherman, NY in a generational dairy farm family with father, Mead and mother, Beatrice Newell and siblings, JoAnn and William. He graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelors’ Degree in Agricultural Science and was a proud member of the Zeta Psi fraternity. Following in his parent's footsteps, he, and his then-wife (Emily) started their own dairy farm, Ed-Em Farm in Findley Lake, NY. For over 34 years, he valued his farmer lifestyle and was grateful for the many people that worked with him on the farm. He was proud to provide food for his community through his hard work. Among his creative endeavors, Ed and his family famously grew and sold sweet corn in the community for "$1 a dozen"! During this time, he earned many awards, including "Outstanding Young Farmer of America" as he was an innovator in the dairy industry. He served as a Director of Sherman Farmer's Mill and a board member of WNY Harness Horseman's Association. Edward owned North Creek Stables, where he raised and trained standardbred horses for 20 years. Edward loved all animals in his care dearly (cows, horses, and his beloved dogs) and showed it by treating God's creatures with compassion. After his retirement, Edward enjoyed spending time with confidants at the Buffalo Raceway, analyzing the racing program, while having a nice meal and good conversation. He cherished many friends from different parts of his life and looked forward to keeping in touch with everyone and checking in on their families. His friends from high school still called him Eddie! Adventurous at heart, Edward loved to do crazy escapades such as riding a hot air balloon or even taking a trip to Russia by himself. He was an avid sports fan who liked to play tennis much of his life, enjoyed basketball, and always cheered on the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Cavaliers. Edward loved to prank people, making April Fool’s Day the funniest day of the year, keeping everyone on their toes. He embraced his extended family members, such as his children's spouses when they joined the family. Edward loved his family with his entire heart, especially his children and grandsons. They knew it because he told them proudly and often. Age 81 of Derby, NY entered into peaceful rest on December 12, 2021. Loving father of Lisa (J. Scott) Garvey and Randy (Tracy) Newell; grandfather to Benjamin and Beau Garvey; brother of JoAnn (Paul) Edwards and William (Brenda) Newell; several nieces and nephews, cousins and truly-valued friends. Graduate of Cornell University School of Agriculture; brother of Zeta Psi Fraternity. Owner of Ed-Em Dairy Farm in Findley Lake, NY as a steward of the land for over 30 years. Edward was proud to provide food for others and was dedicated to caring for “all of God’s creatures.” Owner of North Creek Stables, he trained standardbred horses for 20 years. Served as a director of Sherman Farmer’s Mill, board member of WNY Harness Horseman’s Association, and represented New York State as an Outstanding Young Farmer of America. Avid fan of the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Cavaliers; always enjoyed dinner with his friends and good conversation. Gratitude is expressed to all of Edward’s caregivers and doctors. A family celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Lakeside Memorial Funeral Home in Hamburg, NY 716-627-2919.
