Obituary of Herbert A. Paas

Herbert Paas was a loving, personable man who loved meeting new people and started conversations with strangers all the time. He was known as "The Entertainer" at family gatherings and holidays since he filled the room with laughter and childlike goofiness, ensuring everyone had a good time. He also entertained by singing at weddings and parties and even at church. He was always willing to help others, including snowplowing for his neighbors well into his 80’s. He got the name "Horn Happy Herb" from his neighbors because he always tooted his horn as he drove down the street just to say hello. He liked that name so much; he made it his email address! Anything Herb got interested in; he would master it. Once, he found a dryer on the side of the road and refurbished it for his kids. He worked on small motors, appliances, radio control airplanes, and computers - which he was known to build from scratch. He loved planes, but he never was able to get his flying license because of health reasons. Herb met his love Caroline at Parents Without Partners, and the couple hit it off and dated for two years before they married and spent 42 beautiful years together. Family was very important to Herb. In his kids' younger days, Fridays were always pizza nights where they would get together and make pizzas and watch scary movies, which wasn’t Herb’s preferred genre but he was happy to do it for the kids. He even took one of his son's to a Kiss concert once just to see how much he enjoyed it! He passed his love of sports on to his boys and taught them almost everything they knew. He even got one of his son's into the Scranton Fire Co., where he was a life member. Herb thought of this as not only a great way to give back to his community, but something he could share and enjoy with his family. Herb loved spending time with them and, later in life, spending time with his grandchildren. Herb worked at the West Seneca Developmental Center aiding individuals with developmental disabilities. He later went to the WNY Children's Psychiatric Center and worked as a Secure Care Treatment Aide helping children and young adults. Upon retirement he worked as a school bus driver at Fisher Bus Company. Herb loved competition. He coached softball and baseball and was the pitcher for the fire company's softball team. Herb was very proud of being in the National Guard, his faithfulness to his church, and bible study. He loved the holidays, watching Hee-Haw and Sha Na Na every weekend, and even saw Sha Na Na at Melody Fair. He loved watching reruns of the Wizard of Oz and could quote the whole movie. He loved the color cranberry and the smell of lilacs, and spending time with his dog Milo. These were a few of his favorite things, the things that brought simple joy and happiness to his life! When not helping others, coaching or spending time with family, Herb enjoyed playing instruments, such as accordion, some guitar, and pan flute and even taught himself songs. He enjoyed listening to Statler Brothers, Elvis, Righteous Brothers, Johnny Cash, and the Oakridge Boys. Herb will be greatly missed by all his family and friends, and remembered by all he touched.
