Hugh Hoy

Obituary of Hugh Hoy

Hugh Hoy was born 7/10/1924 in Kilmarnock, Scotland to parents Cornelius Hoy (born 1883) and Alice (Mair) Hoy (born 1884). At 97 years of age, Hugh now joins his wife of 66 years, Patricia Mary (Mulvaney) Hoy. Patricia passed away April 30th 2020. Dad is now reunited with his wife, parents, 9 siblings and many other family and friends that have passed on before him. Hugh was part of the Home Guard during WWII, and during that time he was called out of work to get cleaned up and put on his uniform to gather for review. He recounted seeing a pretty girl about his age among those walking by his unit, her name turned out to be Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth that is. Hugh went where he had to go to find work after WWII, in Scotland, and in England. In England, Hugh visited a lot of dance halls after work. One night stood out because he asked a young lady to dance, and they ended up waltzing together from that day forward. Still dating, Hugh went to Ireland for three months to work and had told Patricia he wasn’t a letter writer, however, Mom received a letter every week that he was away. They dated almost 10 years before getting married on St Patrick’s Day at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Charlton, England. Hugh and Patricia lived in England for several years and had two sons, David and Peter. In 1957 they immigrated to Canada, sailing on the Empress of Britain. In Canada, they had two daughters, Maureen and Irene and then in 1963 moved to Western New York and had two more sons John and Thomas. Hugh was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of Our Lady of Sacred Heart Church and worked the bingo there for many years. Hugh worked at Pohlman’s foundry until he retired in 1988. Hugh enjoyed his travels and adventures almost as much as making the Sunday fry ups after Mass. He returned to Scotland and England several times over the years. He went to Hawaii for his 40th wedding anniversary, walking the beaches in Aruba, and visited a handful of states over the years, including Texas, Oklahoma, Virginia, Florida, Connecticut, and the Carolinas. At age 75 he embarked on a trip with his son Peter, to St Thomas to be part of the working crew on the Tall Ship Rose. Golf was Hugh’s passion, loved to play it, watch it, and talk about it. His last outing was about two months ago, he was able to swing the club a few times only but was quite happy driving the golf cart. The last few years Dad has been out and about having breakfast and dinner and he loved to taste and critique the wide selection of beers he tried. Hugh and Patricia lived in the same house in Orchard Park for 52 years before moving to Hamburg a few years ago. Hugh built his garage and loved to tinker with cars and fixed whatever was needed in the house primarily with duct tape and WD40, (long-running family joke). He built extra bedrooms and a bathroom in the house, installed a pool, and built a deck for the pool, which we had many fun family times. In retirement, Hugh also spent a lot of time with grandkids. Dad never liked to be the center of attention, unlike our Mom. He always said when he passes just think of him from time to time and raise a glass to fond memories. So, if you are too distant to join us to celebrate the lives of Patricia and Hugh Hoy, just think of them next time you have a cup of tea or pint of beer.
