Obituary of James Patrick Lafferty

James "Jim" Lafferty was a man with a beautiful smile who greeted everyone with a firm handshake. Known for his quick-witted humor, he loved to tell jokes and make everyone laugh. He was called "Lima" in high school because he followed his brother JB's footsteps, whose nickname was "Beans." The two served together in the US Navy in Vietnam. Jim was the first Vietnam veteran Commander that served at the VFW Post 1419 and after his duty, he continued as a life member. Jim met the love of his life, Mary, and the two were blessed with three beautiful daughters; Colleen, Jaime, and Megan. Family was everything to him, and he made a point of always telling them how much he loved them. The family later welcomed grandchildren, who Jim would do anything for at the drop of a hat. He never missed any sporting events and jumped at any opportunity to spend some quality time with them. He was known to his grandkids as the best papa ever. To keep the family together, he had a sibling breakfast once a year with JB, Julie, and John at the Odessey Restaurant. The four of them would reminisce and laugh for hours. Jim was a proud member of AA, where he sponsored many people and helped them on the road to recovery. He took his service work into the prisons, where he carried the message to those in need. He was also very active at St. John Paul II Church, and the school board of Southtowns Catholic School. There he started the girl's basketball team in the early 90’s and helped coach the track team. At the age of 65, he even got his Black Belt in Taekwondo and was "Student of the Year"! When he wasn't volunteering his time to others, Jim loved traveling. Some of his favorites were traveling to the Carolinas to visit family or Florida to visit his daughter. Another pastime he loved was listening to 50's and 60's music while singing with kids in the car and dancing the jitterbug every chance he could. Jim will surely be missed by everyone he touched.
