Joseph “Peter” Foley died 08/15/2021 at age 93. Peter is the son of Matthew O. Foley and Edna M. Murphy. He is the third youngest of 12 children, all of whom are now deceased. His father, Matthew, was a former sportswriter for the Chicago Inter Ocean and was named Official Scorekeeper for Chicago Cubs during the Federal and National League era. Later was editor for Hospital Management and Founder of National Hospital Day on May 21, 1921 (Florence Nightingale’s birthday).
Peter was drafted into the US Army in 1946 and, while awaiting classification, was assigned with other recruits to guard Nazi POWS who he later learned were working with U.S. military on rocket and nuclear projects. He received an early discharge after 11 months of service. He graduated from the University of Illinois on June 12, 1950, with a BS in Management. On June 25, 1950, the Korean Conflict began, and he was redrafted for that conflict. He joined the US Air Force receiving direct appointment as a 2nd Lt in the Medical Service Corps. In 1952, he served 11 months in Seoul Korea (K16) as OIC and Liaison of the 801st detachment of Flight Nurses and corpsman responsible for Air Evacuation of serious wounded UN forces from front line MASH Units to military hospitals in Korea and Japan. His unit participated in the early release of UN seriously wounded POWs in Little Switch and all other UN POWs in Big Switch preceding the cease fire agreement. During his time in the military, Peter was awarded the Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, UN Service Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal.
Peter married Renée Kenyon in Bartlett, IL in December 1955. The pair would share almost 65 years together. They would also be blessed with six children, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. During their summer vacations they took their six children on historic/scenic vacations in a Pop-up camper visiting 48 of the 50 states, Canada, and Mexico. He was a Certified Systems Professional (CSP) and retired from Bethlehem Steel and two compressor plants in Buffalo. He and his wife were active in charity, community, youth, and senior activities. During his spare time, Peter was an avid gardener, golfer, and big Buffalo Bills fan.

Beloved husband of the late Renée Foley; devoted father of the late Peter (Ger), Brian (the late Patti), Lauren (Keith), Paul (Mary), Renée (Lucian), and Joseph (Mary Kay); loving grandfather of Samantha (Josh), Robin, Adam, and the late Erin; caring great-grandfather of Matilda and Oscar; also survived by many nieces and nephews. Proud Army Veteran of WWII and Air Force Veteran of the Korean Conflict. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Sat. 8/21 at 10:30 AM at St. Mary’s of the Lake Church. Please assemble at church.
