Obituary of Mary T. Walker

Mary was a passionate, adventurous, beautiful woman with an infectious laugh and a spirit larger than life. She was raised in South Wales, where her parents owned a 700 acre dairy farm. There, Mary developed a lifelong love of animals large and small that she carried with her throughout life. Having a special fondness for horses, Mary was an avid equestrian and participated in many competitive horse shows starting at the age of 8. She passed these equestrian skills and passions along to her daughters. An athlete by nature, she got involved in bodybuilding, as well as Kempo karate, where she worked her way up to second degree black belt. Mary was always excited and open to new experiences. With her husband, Max, she jumped into many new activities during their 30+ years of marriage. She learned how to whitewater kayak, loved downhill skiing, and developed the skills needed for mountain biking. While she was initially a little apprehensive about starting mountain biking in her fifties, within a year she was racing, winning and standing on the podium. Mary and Max became active members of the WNYMBA, Western New York Mountain Bicycling Association, where they met the most amazing new friends, went on many incredible trail rides and experienced some of the finest craft beers, after the rides of course. Her greatest experience in life, however, was motherhood. Mary and Max were blessed with two daughters, Brittany and Brooke, who have developed into accomplished, independent young women. They are both so very proud of their daughters, who inherited Mary’s adventurous spirit and pursuit of achieving excellence. She loved kids in general, and worked as a bus driver for the Lakeshore School District for 12+ years. She loved her job there and referred to all the students as “my kids," and cared about each of them – even when they weren’t the best behaved. Her “kids” loved her too, and they always showed their appreciation with many cards and gifts around the holidays. One of Mary’s favorite things to do was work in her flower garden. She was very knowledgeable about flowers and plants, and was involved with the Eden Garden Club serving in various capacities, including president. She also loved birdwatching, another hobby she and Max shared together. They could both name just about any bird from a brief glimpse or call. Mary was a nature lover through and through. She was also an avid reader and especially loved Harry Potter. She read the entire series at least a dozen times. Seeing the new Harry Potter movies, which were released around her birthday, was a favorite family event for many years. Mary was truly the kind of person who made the most of her time on earth and will be missed by many. We are so fortunate to have had her in our lives. “You sort of start thinking anything’s possible if you’ve got enough nerve.” – J.K Rowling, Harry Potter and the Half -Blood Prince.
