Obituary of Daniel J. Bauer

Daniel J. Bauer – Retired Police Officer The Town of Hamburg Police family lost of their retirees. Dan Bauer served his community for over 25 years with integrity and honor. Dan loved his job and was a presence on the department with his straight shooting, no nonsense attitude. He epitomized what a police office should be - tough when faced with a challenge, understanding when dealing with the community, and compassionate when helping people in their most difficult times. As a past president of the Police Benevolent Association (PBA), Dan always stood up for what he believed was right, often times at great personal expense. He was an early member of the department’s Emergency Response Team. While on that team, he developed some of his best friendships with fellow officers from other towns and Canada. When he retired after 25 years, his passion for police work took him in a new direction. He joined the Erie County Law Enforcement Training Academy. While at the academy, Dan instilled his knowledge, wisdom, passion, and love of the job in he hundreds of new police recruits that were fortunate to learn from him. Dan was a member of the Hibernian Society, American Legion, Elks Club, Police Emerald Society, and the Black Sheep. During his time with the police force, he received the 1982 Award of Valor, 1984 Policeman of the Year, 2000 Policeman of the Year, and 2007 Outstanding Instructor Award. Dan Bauer died on April 18, 2021 in Florida, where he had lived life to the fullest since 2012. He was 71. He was the son of Lawrence and Jeanne (Mahoney) Bauer. He graduated from the Thomas Aquinas grammar school and Timon High School. He also graduated from Erie County Community College and Buffalo State College with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. He also spent six years in the Army National Guard. Dan Bauer married his high school sweetheart and best friend, Ellen Bauer. Loving father of Alicia Bauer Diamond, Daniel (Mandy) Bauer and Laura M. (Nick) Chavis. Proud and fun grandpa of Presley Bauer, Wyatt Bauer, Miley Stewart, Owen Chavis, and Mackenzie Chavis. Brother of Lawrence (Noel) Bauer, Dennis (Debbie) Bauer, and Sheila (Don) Appleby. Brother-in-law of William (Sherry) Bauer and Suzanne (late Robert) Lynch. Also survived by a very large extended family of many nieces, nephews, and their families. Don had an amazing love for music. During his high school and college years, he was a self-taught drummer in a band “The Mere Mortals.” His love for music gave him the opportunity to share it as he started his own sound system in the 80s and played for many people’s weddings, banquets, and other fun get togethers. After he retired a second time from the academy, he and his wife moved to his dream home in Florida where he ran a sound system for the town. Dan lived life on his terms and surrounded his new friends and family with music and boat rides. Bauer, Daniel J. of Hamburg, NY passed on April 18, 2021. Loving son of Laurence Bauer and Jeanne Bauer (nee Mahoney); beloved husband and best friend of Ellen A. Bauer; devoted father of Alicia Bauer Diamond, Daniel S. (Mandy) Bauer, and Lauren M. (Nick) Chavis; proud grandpa of Presley Bauer, Wyatt Bauer, Miley Stewart, Owen Chavis, and Mackenzie Chavis; loving brother of Laurence (Noel) Bauer, Dennis (Debbie) Bauer, and Sheila (Don) Appleby; caring brother-in-law of Suzanne (late Robert) Lynch, the late Eugene Bauer, and William (Sherry) Bauer; also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Dan was a proud police officer for the Town of Hamburg Police Department. He was a member of their accident investigation team and the SWAT team who participated in competitions in Canada. During his time as a police officer, he was awarded the 1982 Award of Valor, 1984 Policeman of the Year, 2000 Policeman of the Year, and 2007 Outstanding Instructor Award. A graduate of Bishop Timon High School, Erie Community College, and Buffalo State College, Dan also served his country from 1971-1976. Dan was a member of the Hibernian Society, American Legion, Police Emerald Society, and The Black Sheep. After retirement from the policy department Dan went on to teach his trade at the Erie County Policy Academy. When he retired a second time, he moved to his dream home in Indian Shores, FL. living life on his terms and surrounding his friends and family with music, boat rides, and laughter. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Peter and Paul Church on July 23rd at 10:30 AM. Please assemble at church.
