Obituary of Susan B. Keefe

Susan Keefe was known for being very family-oriented, her sense of humor, and always being a shoulder to cry on for anyone who needed her. Born to state trooper Anthony "Dan" and Doris Bily in 1947, Susan began growing up in Wellsville, NY, with her two older sisters, Jeanie, and Diane. When Susan's father passed away when she was only two years old, the rest of the family moved to Hamburg, NY, to start anew. Susan was strong-willed and met every challenge. Adoring the family, she came from, Susan would begin her own family unit after meeting Patrick Keefe in fourth grade while attending St. Peter and Paul School in Hamburg, NY. The pair grew up together. When Patrick joined the military, the couple even wrote letters back and forth. Once Patrick returned from the service, the pair reconnected and were soon married in 1978. Patrick and Susan would then welcome their first child in 1981, Patrick. They would then welcome Jackie in 1984 and Brigid in 1985. Susan loved being a mother, and her children were her everything. Her children knew they could count on her to help them navigate their lives, whether it was a celebration or assisting in a tragedy. To help support her growing family, Susan worked as a phone operator at Bell and Verizon for over 20 years. Despite her long hours, she was always there to help get the kids ready for their days. Susan could often be found observing everyone at family gatherings to soak in all the memories. Susan's life became even fuller with the addition of her grandchildren, Grace, Liam, and Harper, as well as one grandchild on the way. Heavily invested in her family, Susan always knew what was going on and well as their history, earning the title of "Family Historian." Susan also filled her life with hobbies and favorite activities. She loved music. Often taking road trips to areas like Ledgewood Park and Winders Ponds to listen to different types of music, Susan encouraged her family to embrace and express themselves through music. Some of her favorite artists were the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Carly Simon, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, James Taylor, and Eric Clapton. Susan's children credit their love for music to their mother. Another favorite pastime was gardening. Enjoying having the life of flowers and trees around her, Susan knew exactly how she wanted it done. Her garden was a source of pride. Other than gardening she was a very talented knitter. She picked up this talent in the 70’s. She would make blankets for the new babies arriving within the family and perfected it by the time her children had married. She also made a blanket for her son, jack, as a wedding gift for him, and his wife Sara. Susan also made one for Brigid that she still cherishes. If all else failed, one could be Susan spending time with all her pets. Susan will be remembered for her loving heart and sense of humor, showcased by one of her famous sayings, "When you don't laugh, you cry. Find the humor in everything." Keefe, Susan B. (nee Bily) April 26, 2021 of Hamburg, NY. Beloved wife of Patrick F. Keefe; devoted mother of Patrick D. Keefe, John F. (Sara) Keefe, Brigid C.
