Obituary of Joseph Sliz Jr.

Joseph Sliz Jr., "The Man, The Myth, The Legend," was known as "Joseph" at work, "Joe" to friends, and affectionately called "Joey" by his family. A charismatic guy, Joe had a quick wit and a great sense of humor, and he enjoyed making people laugh. Despite being a bit rough around the edges, Joe had a heart of gold. He would have done anything for anyone, even if that involved a bit of jokingly complaining. Joe was also brilliant and an "IT Wizard." These skills landed him the job of Assistant VP of Client Integration at HSBC Bank. When it came to Joe, he always told you like it was, and he appreciated hard work, common sense, and the genuine goodness of people. One of the most important things in Joe's life was his family. He enjoyed spending time with his four siblings, especially JoAnn, who seemed to share a brain with him particularly when it came to their sense of humor, and the pair often shared the same jokes. Joe would even meet the love of his life through her. After being hired into the TOPS Maintenance department, JoAnn introduced him to Colleen who worked in the office with her. The pair quickly hit it off and fell in love. Joe would be the brains and Colleen the brawn. Their family would expand through the years with the adoption of seven cats total: Sly, Sam, Cookie, Neal, Gabe, Gabby and Tisha. He will be reunited with the first three. In his free time, Joe enjoyed a few hobbies. He loved hockey, especially the Sabres, and as a young man, he wanted to go to Minnesota State College with the hopes of going pro. He even had a scout lined up to come and watch him play, but he blew out his knee which prevented that from happening. Much later on, after miraculously beating his first cancer diagnosis, Joe eventually founded the classic rock band entitled the "Uncle Fester Band," which played gigs in the Southtowns from 2008-2013. With Joe as their drummer, and Colleen as their lead singer, the band focused on covering the challenging music of bands like Rush, Kansas, Journey, Styx, Boston and many other classic rock favorites. If all else failed, one could find Joe relaxing in his home as a true "homebody." Joe will be remembered for his kind heart and quick wit, and he will be greatly missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him. Sliz Jr., Joseph “Joe” April 13, 2021 of Derby, NY. Beloved husband of Colleen (nee Ryan) Sliz; devoted father to 4 cats, Neal, Gabby, Gabe, and Tisha; cherished brother of JoAnn (Jeffrey) Abrams, David Grzybowski, Elizabeth Ann (Anthony) Manzella, and James (Kathy) Grzybowski; also survived by 3 nieces, 3 nephews and many, many friends. Joe was a hard worker as Assistant VP of Client Integration (AKA “I.T. Wizard”) at HSBC Bank. Joe was a professional drummer and founder of the Uncle Fester Band (UFB). He will always be remembered as “The Man, The Myth, The Legend.” Services will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joe’s name to the Ten Lives Club 3741 Lake Shore Rd, Blasdell, NY 14219, or Pet Connection Programs, Inc., 12935 Williston Rd, East Aurora, NY 14052.
