Obituary of Owen David McElhaney

Owen McElhaney's Life Story "It's Complicated" Owen was a Buffalo native born on August 11, 1972, to Brenda and Dennis Burroughs, weighing in at 12.6 lbs. with two bottom teeth. He was known for having a kind and genuinely good heart. He also had a great personality and charisma, known for having an infectious smile that lit up any room he walked into. Owen would give you the shirt off your back if you needed it. He was genuine; what you saw is what you got. He always tried to make the best out of any given circumstance and try to make others happy. Owen also had a complicated life filled with many challenges to overcome, including drug and alcohol abuse problems. Owen was bipolar. He tried with all his heart and soul to overcome his challenges and tried to help others. He was a good man and, despite his challenges, he made an incredible life for himself and his family. Many people love him for his kindness, warm heart, and that smile, oh that Owen smile! Owen was raised by his mother, Brenda, and his adoptive father, Craig. He was a big brother to his sister Erinn. The family enjoyed camping and traveling across the USA, visiting every national park and many amusement parks. They also loved his many pets, including Owens pony named Pinto that he and Erinn enjoyed riding together. The family also loved to entertain at their home, enjoying family and friends around the pool. A great many holidays and special occasions were celebrated at the McElhaney home. Owen and his sister loved to sneak out and go on their adventures, to their parent's dismay. Owen and his sister were very close growing up. Owen loved his family with all his heart and he was also very proud of their accomplishments, his dad's toy design career, his mom's kennel, her show dogs, and Erinn working as a toy designer like her dad. He never liked doing barn or kennel chores, but he loved the dogs and the horses but intensely disliked Ozzly, our talking parrot. Owen's mom, Brenda, was the first person who loved him, and the first person he loved. He loved to dance with his mother and share recipes and stories about when he was little and she was little. Owen, always had a million questions. It took a village to raise Owen, hence the “Other Mothers” who all played a role in Owens's life and whom he loved dearly and often spoke of with love in his heart. They are Kathryn Shine, Judith Rowley, Helen Gorzynski, Sandy Balling, Edna Johnson, Jodi O'Connor, Lucia Maloof, and Gida DiCaprio. All amazing women. Owen's family grew when he met Stephanie and fell in love, and had Sebastian, his only child. Sebastian was his pride and joy and was considered his "mini-me." not only did the pair bear a striking resemblance, but they were inseparable. Sebastian followed Owen everywhere, and in turn, Owen taught Sebastian everything he knew, from building cars to how to cook and build stairs. He was so proud of Sebastian's athletic abilities. Owen worked tirelessly to make sure his family and friends were taken care of no matter what they needed. When Owen loved you, you were loved. He loved Stefane and Sebastian, his little family, with all his heart and soul. He was a great father and so very proud of his boy. Spending his Saturdays helping Sebastian clean his room, walk biscuit, and when they finished, they ordered take-out and play video games together. Owens's lifelong friends were Chris O'Connor, Jen Hoffman, and Amy Watson. He had so many good friends. He loved his cousins Jake Bowser, Eric Bowser, Kim, and Tommy Melewski. Owen enjoyed visiting with them at his Aunt Lucy and Uncle Ralphs home; then later, after his uncle passed, he visited Jake's house. He loved his Aunt Kathy and Aunt Linda. He also enjoyed spending time with his McElhaney family in Dunkirk, NY. Owen had two half brothers, Travis and Orion Burroughs. One of his proudest moments was when he arranged a family reunion in Texas and took his brother Orion with him to reunite him with his father Denny and the Burroughs family before his father passed. Edna and Travis Burroughs were his Texas family. While growing up, he would travel to Texas over the summer to visit with his dad. He loved his Uncle Sherman, as well. When Owen was not spending time with his family, he had various activities that he enjoyed. Owen was good with his hands and was a skilled electrician. These skills translated well to working on his Jaguar and other vehicles, and he helped his dad Craig do electrical work in their Bristol home. Owen was also a fantastic cook, famous for his french onion soup and clam chowder. He loved a neat house. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, riding in boats, and jet skies with Stefane, his wife. If all else failed, one could find Owen enjoying music or dancing. He even DJ'd with his best friends Chris and Justin for some time. No one ever wanted to miss out on Owen's fantastic stories that he would embellish on. And there were many. He was the coolest in his shades, the shining star at every party or get-together. He loved a good meal and good food, so he enjoyed dining out with Stefane and Sebastian. Owen will be remembered for his large and loving heart full of love to give. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. As Owen would say, "it's life, and it isn't that simple, I am not the norm, nor a regular guy or a perfect anything, its complicated Mom and somewhat messy yet it is so simple, I love you, and you love me, that's the only thing that matters." Then that Owen smile! To: Eliza Black and family, Owen loved you; you can be sure of that.
