Thomas Lembke

Obituary of Thomas A. Lembke

Tom Lembke was a perpetual learner who loved to teach others, experience any outdoor adventure, and spend time with his family. Tom was born on March 7, 1935 to Albert and Lucille Lembke, one of eight children. Tom and his wife, Phyllis were married almost 64 years, raising six children, leading to an extended family of 17 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. After earning a degree in Metallurgical Technology at Erie County Technical Institute and a Chemical Engineering degree at Indiana Institute of Technology, he began his 35-year teaching career at Erie County Technical Institute (Erie Community College), retiring in May 1997. After teaching Physical Chemistry for 20 years, he transitioned to technology, starting the Manufacturing Technology and Robotics program at the city campus where he worked for the last 15 years of his career, becoming department chair. During his ECC days, Tom was also instrumental in setting up the Faculty Federation union, becoming president. Much of what he put in place is still active today. Being a college professor enabled Tom to spend summers with his family on property he and Phyllis purchased on Jobammageeshig Lake in Ontario, Canada. Over 30 years, his children and many grandchildren were able to experience the beautiful and rustic environment. Tom continued to enjoy outdoor living when he and Phyllis moved in 2001 to Granger, NY, engaging in hunting and farming activities, before moving to Hamburg, NY. They spent winters in Florida, often watching beautiful sunsets at Madeira beach. Thomas Alfred Lembke was one week shy of his 86th birthday when he passed away peacefully on March 1, 2021, surrounded by his family. He was full of love, fully loved and will be greatly missed by all those lucky enough to have known him. Lembke, Thomas Alfred March 1, 2021, of Hamburg, NY and Seminole, Florida.
