Obituary of John R. Wicka
John Wicka (known by many as “Wick”) was an outgoing and dedicated man who knew how to enjoy life to the fullest. One of the driving forces in his life was his dedication to the fire service. A life time member of the Lake View Fire Department, for 48 years, a four time Past President, and elected as Fire Commissioner and Commissioner/Secretary for the past 30 years continuously. He also served as Company Chaplain for many years, and was a member of multiple committees. He was a long standing member of the Erie County Fire District Officers Association, in which he served as the Secretary Officer, two time Past President, and Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York (AFDSNY) Board of Directors Region 6. Not to mention a part of several committees including, but not limited to: Administrative Committee/Policy Committee, Budget Committee, and Chairman of the Law & Legislative Committee. He was described my many people as being the "pillar" of the community, and the "rock and staple" of the Lake View Fire District. Everyone who knew him through his extensive involvement in all of these ventures regarded him as someone who was tirelessly dedicated to driving improvement. For 35 years, John worked as the Manager of Western Area Operations Officer of Consumer Services for the New York State Public Services Commission, helping to regulate public utilities. He was also a driving force in keeping emergency dispatch services in the town of Hamburg, which strengthened the community and saved many people from losing their jobs. When he had some down time in between his many jobs and projects, John enjoyed attending and watching Buffalo Bills and Sabres games, so much so that his beloved dog is also named Sabre. He loved dogs tremendously, but it was his past dog, Chief, who he trained to collect the mail from the mail carrier, and fetch his slippers upon coming home from work in the evening! Golfing anywhere he could and riding his special Fireman’s edition Harley were also valued pastimes for John. A dedicated family man, John met his wife, Mary, at church, where she was taken with his charismatic charm while he spoke in a class they attended together. The couple were blessed with a daughter, Lindsay, who has many fond memories together with her dad. Some include watching Sabres games together, laughing over jokes until they cried, and John building many pieces of custom furniture for her apartments over the years. He enjoyed spending time with his siblings, and surprising his nephews with special outings for their birthdays. One of his favorite annual traditions happened a few days before Christmas Eve when his daughter, sister, and brother would come over and would make the traditional family pierogi recipe (with a few special tweaks!) passed down from John's mother. John was truly a one-of-a-kind-man who left behind many special memories and accomplishments that he will be remembered for for many years to come.
