Jay Chapman, affectionately known as “Jay Bird,” by many dear friends, was a man known for his incredible sense of humor. Jay was ever the jokester and always knew how to get a laugh out of you. Incredibly fun and happy go lucky, Jay was the best guy to spend time with. Jay was also a family man, who deeply loved and cared for his family.
Jay’s family started when he met, Virginia. The two fell in love and were married for close to 70 years. Jay’s wit fit right in with Virginia’s large Italian family. The pair soon expanded their family with the birth of their son, David, and daughter, the late Diane. The family only grew from there. With the addition of grandchildren, Jay could not have been happier. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, and they in turn loved to see him at family events. Another large part of Jay’s life were friendships. Jay loved spending time with his friends and his son’s friends. He could often be found spending time with the late Leo and Angelo Butera or joining in on poker games with his son.
Spending time with friends and family tended to include rabbit hunting in his younger days, playing cards, making wine, and golfing. Jay was determined to master the sport and enjoyed watching it on television as well. When not spending time with his family or hobbies, Jay could be found working as a Class A welder for Bethlehem Steel, focused on train cars.
Jay will be remembered for his lovable personality and his great wit. He will truly be missed.
