A remembrance in your prayers, good works and sacrifices is requested for the happy repose of the soul of our Sister Mary Antonia Skorniak, FSSJ
Sister Mary Antonia Skorniak died peacefully on Monday, November 2, 2020 at St. Francis Park in the 94th year of life and the 67th year of religious life.
Genevieve Skorniak was born on January 3, 1926 in Buffalo, NY to the late John and the late Frances (nee Braciszewski). On January 5, 1952 she became a postulant and on July 23, 1956 Sister Antonia professed her final vows.
Sister Antonia received a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Madonna College in Detroit, MI. For fifty-one years, Sister Antonia dedicated herself to educating young children at St. Vincent de Paul and St. Mary’s of the Lake in the Hamburg, NY area; St. Stanislaus in Trenton, NJ and St. Sebastian in Dearborn Heights, MI. When her education career ended, Sister continued to be involved in convent volunteer ministries at Immaculate Conception Convent, Hamburg, NY before joining her Sisters in the Care Community in 2012.
Sister Antonia’s family, sisters in community and former colleagues knew her as a fun-loving, gentle and compassionate person totally dedicated to her vocation to God. She wrote recently, “my suffering is for community members, the Church’s needs, creation and world affairs. God is my reason for being, for doing. God is my guiding love, care, mercy, faith, hope and love. God is my reason for everything… prayer, relationships and conversations with others. God will not abandon us! Keep hope ALIVE!”
All who knew her would agree that that is how she truly lived her life.
Sister Antonia is survived by her sisters in community and many nieces and nephews, all who loved her dearly.
Arrangements by Lakeside Memorial Funeral Home. Services will be held privately. Burial will be at St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Cheektowaga, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph in memory of Sister Antonia Skorniak.
No eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived,
what God has prepared for those who love God. ~ 1 Cor. 2:9
