Obituary of Berthold Joseph Laufer

Berthold, affectionately known as Bud or Poppy, was a gentle giant who was always a generous, loving man. Born in Buffalo in 1941, Bud lived with his parents and sister, Pat, until he joined the U.S. Navy in 1958, where he served his country for four years. In May of 1963, Bud meets Dee at a city bar, and three months later get married, and proving many wrong, were married for 57 loving years. Together they had 4 children, 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Bud attended apprentice school and made his livelihood as a steamfitter for 44 years at Quackenbush working under Local Union 395. Becoming a loving father and grandfather was easy for Bud. He enjoyed taking his grandsons, Erik and Tommy, to several air shows each year (and ate lots of hot dogs!) Bud was a very emotional man, and he passed this trait down to all four of his kids. As he continued through life, he enjoyed many activities that kept him entertained. He always made sure his kids were never without a pool during the hot Hamburg summers. Bud was a motorcycle rider and enjoyed spontaneous rides with the Dee and the kids to Crystal Beach and the “blue bridge”. He also enjoyed traveling to Cedar Point (to see Uncle Phil), Las Vegas and Foxwoods Casino. He and Dee even named their cats Vegas and Reno! Later in life, he enjoyed doing puzzles and frequenting many casinos with Dee. Bud loved sports, especially Buffalo Bills football, and was even a season ticket holder for a decade during the Jim Kelly years. He also loved Yankees baseball, bowling and flew in a hot air balloon for his 50th birthday. Bud was the BEST French onion soup maker who loved having weekend “onion soup parties” for the family. He also continued his mother’s tradition of making “cuke juice”, which everyone loved! Laufer, Berthold J. “Bud” September 22, 2020 of Hamburg, NY. Son of the late Berthold F. and Irene (nee Eron) Laufer; Beloved husband of Dolores “Dee” Laufer (nee Carson); devoted father of Mary (Robert) Hebner, Thomas (Carrie) Laufer, Karen (Kevin) Ludlow, and Jodee (Richard) Doyle; cherished Poppy of Tanya (Aaron) Spurlock, Erik (Arielle) Hatch, Sarah (Lucas) Hebner, Tommy Laufer Jr., Staci (Justin) Hatch, Holly Hebner, Bethany (Kevin) Laufer, Devin Doyle, Jacob Ludlow, Tara Laufer, Jordyn Doyle; loving great-Poppy of Olivia Smith, and Logan Wills; dear brother of Patricia Laufer; also survived by dear friends. Bud was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy and a dedicated steamfitter of 44 years with Local 395. Friends received Sat. 9/26 from 9:30AM-12:30PM at LAKESIDE MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME INC. 4199 LAKE SHORE.
