Obituary of Carl Edwin Kirst
Carl Kirst was a fun-loving family man with a great sense of humor. After attending Saints Peter and Paul School, he quit high school early to join the U.S. Coast Guard to serve in World War II. After he returned from his service, he married his wife Mabel. The two met while she was working at Biehler’s restaurant and remained married for 72 years. To make a living, Carl worked as a carpenter for Bley Construction as a home builder on the east side of Buffalo. After, he went on to work for Shanks Construction where he helped build the Hamburg Town Hall and the Rectory of Saints Peter and Paul Church. Eventually he went on to create Hines and Kirst Construction and then Kirst Construction with his two sons; this company remains in the family to this day. Carl used his carpentry skills to build his children and grandchildren all toy boxes. He adored his family and they all loved him very much in return. His children gave him twelve grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. Many happy memories were made at his summer home near the Thousand Islands. Along with family life, Carl liked playing card games like poker, pinochle, gin and euchre and relishing in a good glass of scotch or gin. Golfing was also a hobby of his, as he belonged to the Wanakah Country Club. Carl was a natural leader and served for many organizations such as a past president of his Home Owner’s Association in Florida and Willow Bend, a past trustee of Saints Peter and Paul Church, a member of the Hamburg Volunteer Fire Company and the oldest member of the Hamburg Knights of Columbus. Carl will be remembered for his strong work ethic, leadership, and missed by all he served in his community. Kirst, Carl E. August 23, 2020 of Hamburg, NY.
