Harvey Whitney, otherwise known as his CB handle “Fly By Night” was a family man with a love for the open road. He was a truck driver for most of his life where he hauled steel for Bethlehem Steel, Gibraltar Industries and Republic Steel. One of the most exciting jobs he had was hauling the staging for the Rolling Stones “Steel Wheels” tour, all over North America. Harvey drove truck until he was 81 with price Trucking being the last company to serve for. Loved ones remember him as “Google Maps before Google” as Harvey always knew the best scenic routes to get to any destination.
When Harvey was not driving truck, he was enjoying the open road on his motorcycle, which he road until he was 84 years old. Harvey was a Korean War, Navy Veteran and was active with the Patriot Guard Riders. Him and his wife Rosemary even did the 9-11 Run.
Family life was very important to Harvey, as he was blessed with seven children, eighteen grandkids and nine great-grandchildren. He loved taking his kids to the beach, Darien Lake and camping at Cayuga Lake. Harvey himself liked boating and camping and when he was younger, water skied and rode snowmobiles.
Giving love to animals in need had a special place in Harvey’s heart. He enjoyed feeding birds and taking in cats who needed love. He adopted two feral cats that he brought indoors and trained, who he named “Harley” and “Meow Meow.” Harvey was a man of great patience and love.
As he got older and retired from the road, he enjoyed watching the Youtuber “Traveling Robert” since he could not travel himself anymore. He was a strong man that would often hide when he did not feel well; when he started losing his balance later in life, he preferred to avoid the issue and often “lost his cane.” Independence and freedom were always cherished, even until the very end.
