Obituary of Shirley A. Stephens

Shirley Stephens, affectionately known as “Peaches” was a wonderful woman with a bright smile who was always happy. She married her dear husband George sixty-five years ago and he misses her terribly. The two met at a restaurant in 1954 while playing pinball together, her being fourteen and him being eighteen years old. In the 80’s, Shirley was the manager of the Goodwill store in Lackawanna. Nothing brought her more satisfaction than being a mother and a grandmother. Life blessed her with five children, 18 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Family was everything to Shirley and she always lit up when her grand-kids came to visit. Hosting and cooking for family during the holidays was always a joy, as well as decorating her home. Her children’s favorite dishes that she cooked were lazy pierogi, sweet meatballs and George’s favorite, stuffing balls, which she taught her children how to make. In her spare time, she enjoyed shopping on QVC and hitting up bingo events in Canada. Shirley appreciated classic country music and loved the song “Storms Never Last” by Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter; the lyrics are a wonderful reminder to keep on smiling through the tough times, because the clouds will eventually clear to reveal the sun. “Storms never last do they baby Bad times all pass with the winds Your hand in mine stills the thunder You make the sun want to shine Storms never last do they baby” Stephens, Shirley A. “Peaches” (nee McKinney) July 19, 2020 of Angola, NY. Beloved wife of George Stephens; devoted mother of Jeffery (Cheri) Stephens, Darlene (Bruce) Best, Christopher (Sherry) Stephens, Mark (Kristen) Stephens, and Nancy (James) O’Neill; loving sister of Al (Joyce) McKinney, Larry (Nancy) Hallman, Nancy (late Harry) Caswell, Raymond (Lisa) Hallman, John (June) Hallman, late Joyce (Wilford) Brown, and late George (Kathy) McKinney; also survived by 18 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, many nieces and nephews. Private services will be held at the family’s request.
