William Falkner

Obituary of William D. Falkner

William Falkner, affectionately known as “Shoey” and “Dollar Bill,” was born in Buffalo, New York on January 14th, 1926. He was the youngest of nine children and outlived all of his siblings. He attended St. John The Evangelist Grade School and graduated from South Park High School. A year out of high school Bill entered the Army and was shipped overseas in 1945. He served in the Army tank corps during his European duty and was severely wounded when his tank took a direct hit. In an Army field hospital he was told not to expect to live more than 6 months. He was awarded two Purple Hearts for his injuries. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Western New York and took over the shoe business started by his father in the Buffalo Hydraulics area of Seneca Street. Bill didn’t brag about or discuss his heroic actions, he simply stated “we did what we had to do to serve our Country”. He grew his father’s shoe business and moved to the Southgate Plaza in 1960. He enjoyed a faithful customer following for his 46 years in the shoe business. He went on to become a West Seneca Town Councilman, and later an Erie County security guard and lot attendant in the Rath Building. Bill was a member of the West Seneca Chamber of Commerce and named the ”West Seneca Citizen of the Year” in 1999. He was an active member of the West Seneca Lions Club for over 3 decades and held all possible offices including President. He received the highest honor of Lions International, “The Melvin Jones Award” for his outstanding service. Bill drove the Senior Citizens Van picking up and transporting his many senior friends to the Senior Center and medical appointments. Bill was an active volunteer fireman for over 7 decades. He was a Life Member of Vigilant and Winchester Fire Companies, having served as Chief and on the Board of Directors of Vigilant. He was a father of eleven children, enjoyed 24 grandchildren, and 27 great grandchildren. Bill was calm and friendly and never complained. He wore many hats but always remained “Gentleman Bill”. He enjoyed being outdoors, barbecues, taking care of his inground pool, and playing with a variety of antique cars, but mostly he enjoyed helping others and serving his Community. West Seneca will be forever touched by his kindness and generosity. Falkner, William D., age 94, May 5, 2020 of West Seneca, NY. Beloved husband of the late Jane C.
