Obituary of Sister Mary David Rapnicki, FSSJ

Sister Mary David Rapnicki died peacefully on Thursday, January 9, 2020 at St. Francis Park in the 88th year of life and the 70th year of religious life. Sr. David was born on October 1, 1931 in Detroit, MI to the late John and the late Julia (nee Maksimowicz) Rapnicki. On January 5, 1949 she became a postulant and on July 19, 1953 Sister David professed her final vows. Sister Mary David received her Masters degree at Marygove in Detroit, MI. For over 40 years, including nineteen years as a school administrator, Sr. David served as an educator in several states where the sisters ministered. In New York State, Sr. David taught at St. Hyacinth, Auburn; Corpus Christi, Buffalo and St. Mary’s of the Lake, Hamburg. She also taught at St. Casimir, Baltimore, MD; St. Sebastian, Dearborn Heights, MI; Daniel O’Sullivan Model School, Flint, MI and St. Mary, Queen of Angels, Swartz Creek, MI and Holy Rosary of Pompeii, Kenosha, WI. She served as a school administrator at several of the schools in which she had previously taught including St. Sebastian, St. Hyacinth. Sr. David was also principal at St. Stanislaus, Baltimore, MD; St. Joseph, N. Tonawanda and St. Hedwig Elementary, Detroit, MI. Sister David completed her years of active ministry by serving in bereavement ministry at Holy Rosary of Pompeii parish before joining her sisters in the Health Care community in Hamburg, NY. Sr. David was a happy-go-lucky child with a good sense of humor. It was early in her life that she realized that she would follow in the footsteps of her two older sisters, Sr. Adrienne and Sr. Bertina, and join the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph. Besides her sisters, Sr. Honoria had a great influence on her life and entering the community. Sr. David always had a soft spot for those who did not experience the family love that she had. Throughout her life, she made every effort to “protect” her little sister, Sr. Roseanne. All of the sisters enjoyed Sr. David’s wit and sense of humor, even into her final days. Sr. David enjoyed spending time with her family, car rides that ended with ice cream stops, reading, bike rides and playing with mechanical devices. Sister David is survived by her sister, Sister M. Bertina, FSSJ; her sister-in-law Susan Rapnicki and nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, January 12, 2020 from 3:00 – 6:30 p.m. at St. Francis Park, Hamburg, New York where a Memorial Prayer Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered in the Chapel on Monday, January 13, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be at St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Cheektowaga, NY. No eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love God. ~ 1 Cor. 2:9
