Obituary of Barbara A. Hoen

Barbara was the third of four “Butler girls” raised in Buffalo to a loving family. She attended Catholic school and college in Buffalo. She married Richard Hoen, had six children and was a devoted wife and mother. Her family would describe her as selfless, humble, generous, strong, kind, a woman of strong faith, with a servant’s heart.
She was an avid walker and was never without a book, she also loved theatre and music. She enjoyed sewing, needlepoint, crochet and was known for her jigsaw puzzles, as well as word games. For many years Barb had her mom and sister over on Sunday afternoons for supper and Yahtzee, as the Butler sisters gathered regularly.  She loved to play games, so most family get togethers included games and laughter. Summer family vacations were a staple. Richard and Barb took their children every year to a cottage in Cape Cod, where some of the fondest family memories were made. Once her children were grown, she and Richard enjoyed quite a bit of traveling, including abroad.
The children always respected their Mother and learned from their parents to never go to bed angry at each other. Barb taught her children the golden rule and lived by it. Family was everything to Barb – she regularly would check in with her children to ask how everyone was doing. Many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were to follow and everyone always received a piece of Barb’s heart.
At a time when a lot of women weren’t in the workforce, Barb worked at Hamburg Jr. High to help put her children through college. She was a meticulous bookkeeper and in her later years was the Treasurer of Southtown’s Seniors. She was also very active at her church and her Catholic faith was very important to her. She carried out Mission multiple times and participated in the Altar and Rosary Society, as well as many other church functions over the years.
Barb was known for her lasagna, and was a very good baker, which also included homemade bread; a staple in their young family. Barb made many friends over the years, loved playing cards, going out with her friends and she placed a high value for the many friendships throughout her life. Barb enjoyed having fun and her memory will be honored through acts of selflessness, kindness and friendship.
