Ronald Wylie

Obituary of Ronald L. Wylie

Rick was a loving and generous, but often stubborn man. He was a straight shooter who always told it like it was and was even known by some to be a little bit of a hard-nose, but would be the first to give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.

Raised in a racing family, Rick started racing when he was 15 years old and never wanted to do anything else. He met his wife, Karen, on the track, and even taking 2nd place to her in the Championships wasn’t enough to dissuade him! Soon they were married, and they raised both of their boys, Jake and Scott, on the track as well. In 1979, Karen became the first woman to win a track championship in the Street Stock division at the famed Perry racetrack, and Rick couldn’t be more proud. The family started Wylie Motorsports and still own and operate it today.

Rick had the proud achievement of being a nine-time champion. A dominating force in the Late Model class, Rick had seven track championships at the Holland Speedway to his name, winning in 1988, 1991, 1992, and 1995-1998.  The last race Rick won in a late model was September 2, 2000. 17 years later, Jake and Scott both won separate races at Holland on September 2! Most of the people who knew Rick knew him as someone who always helped his fellow racers get ready and get their cars out on the track. He was known by all for his truly good nature and giving spirit.

To Rick family always came first. He was a great father and loved being a grandfather to his two granddaughters Paige and Kaylyn. Rick loved to play catch with his granddaughters. He would try to make every one of their lacrosse and softball games, as well as gymnastics meets. When Rick wasn’t on the track or at home with his family, you would find him at his shop working on race cars listening to some country music on 105.6 or maybe some classic rock tunes on 97 Rock. He will be truly missed by his friends, family and loved ones.
