Spencer, Sr. was a husband, father and grandfather who worked hard and loved his country. He was medically discharged from the Army serving in Japan during the Korean War. He was highly involved with his local American Legion Post 63, where he served as President and a member of the honor guard, as well as a Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America. Spencer Sr. was also a member of the Holy Name Society at Our Lady of Sacred Heart where he volunteered his time working as an usher.
Spencer, Sr. married his wife Jane one week before leaving for the Army. Upon his return they started a family having three boys. Due to his service in the Army, Spencer Sr. was known for being strict and always wanted you to do your best. If he wasn’t at the post or at his church, he was doing some remodeling on the house or repairing the roof, he even built his own garage. His sons would take care of the lawn and pool as part of their allowances. Spencer Sr. and his wife Jane were snowbirds, leaving the cold Buffalo winters behind. They enjoyed traveling and would visit their son in Washington state and took several cruises out of Florida. He enjoyed listening to the tunes of the early 40’s and 50’s, especially Lawrence Welk and loved to catch a game of football or baseball on T.V. with his boys in his down time.
