Obituary of Calvin R. Hellert
Cal will always be remembered by many as a very strong-willed, intelligent and kind-hearted man, he was always willing to do things for other people. Cal served in the U.S. Army for several years earning a medal of good conduct and a National Defense Service Medal upon discharge. After his return, he met his wife of 60 years, Gail. His wife was originally set up to go out on a date with his best friend, but Cal had won Gail’s heart and later were married and started a family.
Cal was born and raised in Buffalo and loved his city. Cal never graduated high school, quitting two weeks before graduation, but earned a job working as a machinist. He loved watching his home town teams, The Bills and Sabres. Cal also enjoyed other activities such as working on cars and boats and listening to a little Elvis Presley. He taught his sons how to fix an Oldsmobile, one of his favorite cars. Some other of Cal’s hobbies included going out fishing or tending to his garden, growing roses and tomatoes.
Cal loved to have fun and have adventures with his kids by taking them to amusement parks and white-water rafting. Soon he and his wife Gail’s family began to grow, having five grandchildren, whom he loved spending time with. Cal had a serious sweet tooth and the cure was pie and cookies. His wife would make him a pie almost every single day to keep a smile on his face. Cal had a love for dogs and pretty much all animals. He had a furry best friend, a boxer named Cindy who would sit with him while he worked on cars and sometimes would crawl underneath and steal a tool or flashlight to get Cal’s attention. The neighbors had a beagle named Maxine. Maxine was once hit by a car and worrying about her, Cal brought a blanket onto their patio, and stayed by her side until she recovered. His love of his family, friends and animals will not be forgotten.
