Rita was an independent woman, though she loved taking care of her family as well as herself. She grew up during the Great Depression, so she knew how to take care of everything around the house. She was the home “handyman,” and did all the painting, wallpaper, plumbing, and electrical work. She also stewed and canned tomatoes to put on everything, like mac and cheese and pancakes!
During World War II, Rita met the love of her life, Joseph, while he was in the Coast Guard. It was love at first sight, and they wrote constantly during the war. They both signed their letters with “The Sacred Heart of Jesus.” The pair had a strong Catholic faith that stayed with them throughout their marriage. Every day after dinner, Rita would sit with the kids to say the rosary. She prayed for everyone and would pray special intentions for those in need.
Rita was a talented artist, especially when it came to painting portraits or caricatures. She took art classes at Riverside High School. When all six children were living at home, she would paint after they went to bed.
