After many years of delays and setbacks The Western New York National Cemetery, located in the Town of Pembroke in Genesee County, is expected to be open and available to serve veterans no later than the mid 2020.  The cemetery will be located near Route 77 in Pembroke at exit 48A of the New York State Thruway.

The location is approximately 30 miles east of downtown Buffalo and 45 miles west of Rochester in New York. The next nearest open national cemetery is Bath National Cemetery located in Bath, New York, approximately 104 miles away.

There will be 273 acres available for the cemetery and available room for 96,000 veterans over the next 70 years.

The project is reported to include construction of an administration building, visitor center, public restrooms and two shelters. Final ceremonies can be held for veterans in the shelters prior to burial. There will also be a columbarium, where urns containing the cremains of veterans and their spouses will be laid to final rest. Entrances and landscaping will complete the newest of the current 136 National Cemeteries.

To make the eligibility process easier for veterans to be laid to rest upon their death there is a link on the National Cemetery website for veterans to fill out and complete a “National Service Pre-Need Application”. The form is filled out and sent to the Department of Veterans Affairs, which would then determine whether the veteran is eligible to be buried in a national cemetery.

“The pre-need application is something that a veteran and their spouse can complete and send in. Once approved, family members can have that to give the funeral director when making at need arrangements or the veteran can use it as part of creating a price protected pre-need trust with a funeral home”, said Mark Janik, director of preneed at Lakeside Funeral Home, Inc.

As Veteran Funeral Care Providerstm Lakeside Memorial Funeral Home, Inc. is following the developments at the new National Cemetery and educating area veterans as to what benefits they are entitled to as well as any for their families.
