Obituary of Mary Syjut
Sister Mary Raymond Syjut died peacefully on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at Immaculate Conception Convent in the 91st year of life and the 56th year of religious life. Bernice Theresa Syjut was born on November 30, 1926 in Detroit, MI to the late Jacob and the late Mary (nee Marchewka). On January 6, 1960 she became a postulant and on August 2, 1964 Sister Raymond professed her final vows. Sister Raymond received a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Medaille College in Buffalo, NY. For forty-five years, Sister Raymond dedicated herself to educating young children in Angola, NY, Medina, NY, Bessemer, AL, Westfield, MA, Detroit, MI and Livonia, MI. When her education career ended, Sister continued to be involved in volunteer ministries at Marycrest Manor, Livonia, MI before joining her Sisters in the Care Community in 2017. Sister Raymond had a colorful career. After high school, her work experience took her from the tool shop to managing a grocery market. As she often said, throughout this time God was tugging at her heart so she decided it was time to discern between being a “spinster or a sister.” After a 30-day novena to Mother Mary, she entered the community and became a teacher. Her years ministering to the poor in Bessemer were the best years of her life. With a generous heart and gregarious spirit, she was never shy about begging for the needs of the poor for whom she had a tender heart – a true daughter of St. Francis. Franciscan JOY was the hallmark of her life and ministry. She had a great devotion to St. Joseph (her Joey) and the Blessed Virgin and was a great prayer warrior for those in need of prayers. Sister Raymond is survived by her brother Brian, her sister Elizabeth and her sister-in-law Christine. Sister is also survived by many nieces, nephews and their families.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, December 10, 2017 from 4:00 – 6:30 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Convent, Hamburg, New York where a Memorial Prayer Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered in the convent Chapel on Monday, December 11 at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be at St. Hedwig Cemetery, Detroit, MI.
