Sister Conrad Marie Glica, FSSJ

Sister Conrad Marie Glica died peacefully on Monday, January 1, 2018 at Immaculate Conception Convent in the 83rd year of life and the 64th year of religious life.


Marie Alice Glica was born on February 27, 1934 in North Tonawanda, NY to the late Stanley and the late Caroline (nee Wiech).  On August 22, 1952 she became a postulant and on July 24, 1957 Sister Conrad Marie professed her final vows.


Sister Conrad Marie received a Masters degree in Education from St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY. For over thirty years, Sister Conrad Marie dedicated herself to educating children and teens. She served as a teacher at Holy Trinity in Niagara Falls, St. Joseph in North Tonawanda, St. Vincent in North Evans, Mother of Divine Grace in Cheektowaga and St. Hyacinth in Auburn, NY as well as St. Hedwig in Detroit, MI. Sr. Conrad Marie was also a principal at Immaculata Academy in Hamburg and St. Joseph in North Tonawanda, NY as well as St. Michael in Bridgeport, CT and St. Stanislaus in Trenton, NJ. Sr. Conrad also served as a pastoral minister at Mater Dolorosa in Holyoke, MA and as Director of Religious Education at St. Peter in Lewiston. NY. During that time, she also served for several years as a volunteer in faith formation with the NYS Correctional Services. Sister’s final years of active ministry were offered as a volunteer in the Employees’ Benefits office at St. Joseph Hospital in Cheektowaga, NY before joining her Sisters in the Care Community in 2015.


Sister Conrad Marie was educated by the Felician Sisters during her grade school years and by the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart in high school. It was through her travels with her mother to visit her sister, Sister Emmeline, that she became familiar with the Franciscan spirit and many of the sisters she met along the way. Eventually she fell in love with the community and joined the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph. Sr. Conrad Marie was an avid reader and walker. She also enjoyed doing handiwork including crocheting and needlepoint as well as listening to Polka music.


Sr. Conrad Marie had a strong devotion to the Sacred Heart, the Blessed Virgin and St. Anthony. Each day she diligently recited the chaplets of St. Anthony and Divine Mercy. Sister is survived by nieces, nephews and their families.


Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2018 from 3:00 – 6:30 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Convent, Hamburg, New York where a Memorial Prayer Service will be held at 6:30 p.m.  A Mass of Christian burial will be offered in the convent Chapel on Friday, January 5, 2018 at 9:30 a.m.  Burial will be at St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Cheektowaga, NY.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph in memory of Sister Conrad Marie.
